Will Eisner, from the Spirit to the graphic novel

Universally regarded as one of the world masters of the comic strip in the 20th century, the American Will Eisner (1917-2005) first became known as the creator of Spirit (1940), an upholder of the law in a blue suit and soft hat whose only dress reference to the earlier superheroes is the little mask he wears over his eyes. But Will Eisner’s fame rests just as much on his invention of the term "graphic novel" to describe the format of the works he was to produce in his later years about urban life, Jewishness and interhuman relations in general. This exhibition, based on an exceptional collection of original documents, pays homage to one of the founders of the modern comic strip.
