Open call: looking for candidates for a collective comics studio

Published on 16 October 2023

For the second time in a row, the BCSC is inviting you to apply for our parcipative studio: THE PRINTER'S!

Are you a comic book author?
Do you have a project in progress?
Are you looking for a warm and inspiring work space?
This proposal might be of interest for you.

The Belgian Comic Strip Center invites you to submit your application to join its Comic Book Studio: THE PRINTER'S!

THE PRINTER'S

The studio is located in the heart of Brussels, at 56 Boulevard de Berlaimont. It will open its doors, freely, from 02/01/2024 to 31/08/2024.

For 8 months, 6 authors will have the opportunity to work on their projects in a place equipped with all the necessary material for the creation and realisation of a comic book project (drawing tables, scanner, printer, ...).

PUBLICATION AT THE END OF THE RESIDENCY

Participating in the studio also means taking part in a collective project. At the end, the publication of the collective project will be paid for. In January, the theme will be given and each author will be given between 4 to 6 pages to create something around that topic.

PURPOSE

This residency aims to provide a working framework for professionals within the comics world. Moreover, the creative profession can sometimes be lonely, so that is why the BCSC wants to use this shared space to create a real creative breeding ground. This way, authors can work side by side and share and discuss their backgrounds, working techniques and different sensibilities.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

To be part of this amazing adventure, there are no restrictions in terms of age, years of activity or publications.

But you must submit, before 13 November 2023, a dossier containing the following elements:

  • A Curriculum Vitae showing your track record as an author
  • An extensive and varied portfolio showing the your graphic palette as an author
  • A description of the project you would be working on during the residency. This description should include at least a statement of intent of the project and can be complemented by a pitch, a synopsis and graphic research and/or drawings (with pen or ink).
  • A letter of motivation of one page (maximum) explaining why you want to participate in the atelier, what you want to contribute and what you hope to learn from it

INTERESTED?

Judging will take place between 4 and 8 December 2023. By 15 December at the latest, the selected candidates will be informed of the jury's decision by e-mail and will receive a detailed description.
