My Imaginary Friend: A Comic Art Competition for Schools

This spring, the Comic Art Museum organised a comic art competition for schoolchildren. The challenge? To create a comic of at least one page on the theme ‘My Imaginary Friend’. A playmate, confidant, guide or reflection of our dreams and fears, the imaginary friend holds a special place in childhood and is a wonderful source of inspiration for storytelling.

Almost 150 children and teenagers jumped at the chance to imagine, draw and submit a story. Several classes took part, combining the competition with an exploration of the medium and adding their own unique touches. Above all, it was the students—as well as children and young people participating individually—who succeeded in blending their personal worlds and imagination with contemporary graphic influences, fresh storytelling talent, and boundless creativity.

In this exhibition, you can meet the eight winners of the competition, divided into three age categories. Combining dreams, humour, adventure and emotion, their comics showcase the full extent of the creativity of a new generation of storytellers. Take the time to discover them: behind every panel lies a unique imagination just waiting to be shared.
