Seules à Berlin [Alone in Berlin]

Nicolas Jucker, Casterman Publishers

Inspired by two witness accounts, Nicolas Juncker’s new album tells a compelling story. As can be seen from the selection of original artwork, the author uses pencil, wash drawing and charcoal to accurately recreate the oppressive ambiance of Berlin at the end of the Second World War. The bombardments, the anxiety of some and hope of others… the author’s approach uses different angles and experiences to add interest to his story. Through the journey of two woman he depicts the ambivalence of an era pervaded by many forms of violence. Hatred and fascism are rampant, leaving in their wake intense fear and helplessness. As one of the protagonists says: “Nothing will be like before” but life must go on… The BCSC is delighted to share this remarkable, touching story with its visitors.
